Anzaldúa Poetry Prize: 2015 Winner & Finalists

We are thrilled to announce the winner and finalists of the 2015 Anzaldúa Poetry Prize. So many amazing chapbooks competed for the prize this year, grounded in histories, struggle and inquiry. Once again, we were humbled to see the influence of Anzaldúa’s work on poets who continue to make the world in writing.

The winner of the $500 honorarium and 25 printed copies goes to M.J. Gette. Her chapbook, “The Walls They Left Us,” will be available this spring through our web store, as well as at our booth at this year’s AWP conference in L.A. (Table #832!).

And our finalists? We received so many outstanding chapbooks that we had difficulty choosing five. So we chose six:

  • Dan Donaghy, “What Cement Is Made of”
  • Amanda Huynh, “The First Language”
  • Anna King Ivey, “Simbelmynë”
  • Davy Knittle, “empathy for cars / force of july”
  • Éireann Lorsung, “west, illegitimately”
  • Natalie Scenters-Zapico, “Lessons In Machismo”

A poem by each writer will appear in our annual print edition of the journal this December.

Curious about our winner and finalists? Interviews with all seven will appear on our blog this winter, so stay in touch with us via social media or mailing list.

To all submitters: Newfound’s managing editor will respond personally to all entries. You should receive communication before January 1st.

And THANK YOU to everyone who helped spread the word. We couldn’t do this without any of you, and we are very grateful.

Newfound is committed to making as many great things happen as possible for our winner and finalists every year and we hope to do even more next year. Keep an eye on the contest page as we prepare for our next launch on April 15th, 2016. We hope to be celebrating your work here next year.
